Designing the Finishes!

Hello and welcome back! Today I decided to save my sanity just one more day from diving back into trying to learn electricity and plumbing by modeling and designing some house finishes! And... I thought I'd just photo-dump and share them with you.

How do you decide what you want your tiny house to look like? Well, how do you decide anything? Of course, you could definitely just wing it and hope for the best, which adds that extra element of *spice* to life.... Or... you could do what I did, which was just look at a bunch of homes and take notice on what you like and what you don't like. I imagine this process kind-of like sculpting with playdough. You pick out a bunch of different things that you like, mash them all together, take a step back and think about it, and then work little by little to smooth everything out and shape the monstrous glob of ideas into something that's your own, and that looks how you like it. Of course, there is always boring stuff to take into consideration too. Those things help you decide what bits of your playdough monster to clip off, and which to keep working on. As so much of this process is, research is the key. I checked out Home Depot.com again for information on what kinds of exterior siding options I have, and how expensive, heavy, easy to install, and durable each of the options are. Sure, I'd love to have a brick or a log cabin tiny home, but those parts of my monster blob should really be amputated for its own good. Moral of the story: let yourself be wild and creative, and absolutely have fun with your creation process, but don't let your excitement (or even your secret insecurities) dissuade you from doing the appropriate amount of sensible thinking and RESEARCH! If you didn't figure it out already, if you're going to dive in to a big project like this, you gotta also be willing to spend about a million years in front of a computer, learning. Learn what you don't know. Learn what you didn't know you don't know. Learn what other people didn't know they didn't know and what they then came to know so that you can know it too. But also.....like...take breaks. Eat snacks. You can do it. I believe in you.

I found this article really really helpful for what options you have for exterior finishes on your home: http://tinyhousefor.us/resources/building-tips/all-about-siding-materials-and-styles/

Oh, I would also really recommend keeping, labeling, and organizing all the URLs you find in your research. You will thank yourself a million times later when you're thinking "wait...what did that one thing say about that one really specific and obscure measurement...ahh.." that's gonna happen. About 20 times a day.

Also, for those of you that are interested, I am actually conducting this project as if it were like, a thesis project, say, and eventually I hope to compile all that I have learned throughout this experience and refine it, add in future-Campbell commentary, talk about what all of this means and how it all works in the long-run, and refine it into a massive essay/article/book? If you're interested in that, leave me a comment and maybe I'll push toward putting stuff like that up on this website!
